ICE STATION QUELLETTE: The tragic, exuberant history of the Arctic and the Antarctic discoveries, through the eyes of the early explorers – from first contact to the inevitable misunderstanding, plunder and destruction that set the stage for the calamity that almost destroyed the earth.

First installed as a 27-piece show in four parts, several of the larger pieces remained on display for another year. A deliberate mingling of remixed historical photos and polar landscapes, blatantly fabricated from repurposed photographs and found ephemera, created a foundation of (relative) plausibility for the ISQ's alternative universe.

"Their new incarnation extends their fascinating origins," wrote Diane Armitage in THE Magazine, "giving them an intensely mysteriously aura – as if some of the first encounters with polar bears, penguins, and ships devastated by pack ice were in fact aspects of science fiction as opposed to science fact.”

Santa Fe Institute is a private, not-for-profit campus where scientific researchers collaborate across disciplines, while creating relationships with local artists and writers for the purpose of ongoing cultural dialogue.

Thank you to curator LAURA STEWARD and Santa Fe Institute President DAVID KRAKAUER who welcomed me to their fascinating campus.
